This is a guest post by Matt who is organising the first St Croix Ultra Marathon.
My life, at least the best parts, has been and is a journey of journeys. Somewhere along my journey into adulthood, a realization dawned on me: to travel under one’s own locomotion is to truly know a place. Even now as I write, remembering the voyages made in canoes, on skis and on foot that taught me this truth, I am nostalgic for the places on this earth that captured my heart-mind and imagination.
One such place is my current home, the island of St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The history and beauty of these mountain tops amidst the ocean captivates me. So, I have embarked on a journey to share this island in a unique way with as many (up to 100) people as I can in a day.
When I arrived on St. Croix, I was the only person I knew who had traveled 50 miles in a day on foot, and now I am aware of 1 other person. On January 24, 2010, that will change with the St. Croix Scenic 50 mile run as visitors and locals join in the island’s first ultramarathon. From one centuries old historic fort to the other and back over rugged mountains, along stunning shoreline and through the rainforest, the course will expose participants to the heart of the island and parts of themselves they may not have known, as only endurance sports can.
That is the introduction to the story of my invitation to the world to come and meet my home in the St. Croix Scenic 50
