mountaineering
The tourism industry is the cornerstone of the Kenyan economy with our natural beauty and wildlife being the top draws. Kenya is home to the world famous mega-fauna that is the Big 5, has world-class beaches and has a landscape that ranges from open savannah to wetlands to the second highest peak in Africa, Mount Kenya. But while safaris and game drives remain big business, that majestic peak is proving to be a mountain of a challenge. Not only are the glaciers fading away, but so are visitors. To get to the bottom, or rather, the top of the story, NTVs Steven Bull and cameraman Boniface Mwangi climbed Mount Kenya to see what the situation really is.

Too much time politicizing everything,i bet 99% of kenyans have not been up that mountain. Why aren’t we climbing instead of waiting for tourists.Pointing fingers at the minister and other leaders whom we all know are not serving our interests doesn’t help!!And the perception of kenya to the outside world is UNSAFE,thanks to all the bickering and politics,so who do you think wants to spend their hard earned money in an unsafe country!
Lets be real, domestic tourism is the best deal at the moment
I climbed with Joskawa Tours & could not ask for a better guide. Joseph was strong yet patient leader. He managed a group of different skill levels and needs. I trust him to guide anyone. I first met Joseph in 2000. I have watched his mountaineering grow through love & dedication. His profits are split between investing in his guiding business and the education of his daughter, almost 7. Climb with Joskawa tours and you will invest in your own personal experience and the development of Kenya.

There is no travel advisory issued by the US to Iraq as a destination, it is thus very funny Kenya has been issued a travel ban after another.
iraq there is war what you talkin about travel
Mt, Kenya, Lake Turkana, Arberdare ranges, Lake Victoria, Indian ocean and our animal reserve will thrive..Thats why they are called natural resources, can’t change anything..I’m looking to get to Batian peak. Lets have respect for our country.
Methinks the lesser tourists we get in Kenya, the lesser the interference of the natural resources we have in this lovely country.
Keep Mt.Kenya as it is. Natural
Wao….. this feature and mountain reminds me of my old days in PA scheme with akina Roba, Pius, Anto na wengine at St. Johns…….when we used to hike the hills in Ngong and others every other school holidays…

There are affordable clean safe Bed& Breakfast Hotels in Nanyuki and Nyeri. 5* Rhino, OutSpan and cheap but very neat Batian. For locals there is Three-In-One in Karatina strictly for Happy Go Easy!

is this Mr. Bull in any way related to the late Gerald Bull?
Guys, guys, good for all of you who have hiked the mountain… i have been there too but haisaidii these guys. Cant we help these dudes by perhaps posting some adverts, use of blogs here n there on the net ama kwa facebook? I dont know how but some how i know some of you guys have a better idea..Big brains…just a suggestion…@patriot kenyans
Funny that Iraq has no travel advisory yet Kenya gets advisories when ever they think.
I was there up on Lenana peak in 1983. It was a tough climb because I didn’t have the right shoes or clothing for the cold up there. As boys scouts, we were ready to take on any challenge. We were rained on hard but never got too wet because the rain was in form of rain stones. Up at Lenana in a clear sky, we could see Mt. Kilimanjaro in the distance. I would very much want to climb it again but in a well prepared team this time. Hiking is adventurous.
Arab Balala, this is an already established tourist attraction. Why waste so much time politicking?I would rather worship this majestic god created solid stone than a small meteor in mekka. This is a true God s work but arab don’t think africa has holy places, only them god allowed to have one.Balala go back to yemen. The poorest country in arab world!
not to metion the public squabbles amost govt officials.
unlike fish unlike slums unlike stones- the Mountain shall live on!
Tourism Minister Balala earning a million bucks untaxed, has no idea this iconic Mountain exists…now the world knows thanks to two explorers Steve Bull and Dr. Kraph!
I did Sirimon and it’s absolutely beautiful. The problem here lies mainly with the country facing travel advisories due to secuirty issues. That, and adverse news reports of a crumbling coalition and insecurity on the streets.
@MrMujama Did you use the Naromoru route or the other route from Meru?
I love the Sirimon Route, what a place.I cant believe they have tree dassies/hyrax at 3400 m above sea level.
Excellent video about an excellent mountain. Come to Mt. Kenya to climb and avoid the tourist trap that is Mt. Kilimanjaro.
I have been there, the height is not 4985m, but 4895m above sea level. But all the same, good report
remove mungiki and fight corruption first then tourists will just stream in no shortcut.
Great video. Very helpful for a guy who’s trying to learn. Thanks!
the one most helpful video about ice axe. Thanks
the one most helpful video about ice axe
last comment i promise
but either you a young swiss or fench or eytie who had a few falls before
or you some old arse fool who tired of his cashiers talking about coronation street and embarrasing you wives at the christmas party so you rather drag her out alps somewhere come chrimbo and have her hope you throw you self dddown the slope too hard that you crampons dont stick/do stick/shater you hip/knee la la la…
to be honest
i’m 34 already
and never fell down a mountain
but some things are instinctive
and some things are best practised when you five years old and you body too small and too light to get hurt when you rag doll down a snow drenched 45 deg slope
when you fifty and been manager of a high street bank+took you missus skiing twice a year it dont matter what bone cheaper to break on you insurance hip knee ankle whatever. things i jump of as ten year old at least two times too high to think now
@flubertin Exactly my point.
@LocutusMIT To practice a self-arrest it is not wise to use crampons. These get in the way and hinder progress and can be quite dangerous.
Extremely helpful for an amateur like me! Great & thanks a million
@Cindywong2000 I think they meant that you shouldn’t use crampons while PRACTICING the self arrest.
Advice in the end: Never wear crampons. Are you shitting me? Why wasting a good video with shitty comments?
he should do this right annext to a cliff
@urriel74 what you do then in that hard ice case?
This video has so helpful! You should enter your video in this contest, Ewisdomtv
I tried some of that before. Very usefull video.
Yeah, everything is right in the video but the real problems starts when the ice is REALLY HARD!!
So smart ass, you’re at MIT? Go watch The Obama Deception and see just how smart you are.
BTW Locus, if you want to talk to old boy here its Clamp-Ons from now in. I know why you young boys agreed to “Crampons” in the end. Because your sport was hijacked by the rainbow fags.
Yeh, you know what, I dont need any tampons when I climbs mountains. Thanks. But no thanks.
I think I will find another sport – like building aeroplanes and trest flying them.
Do you know any video examples of what happens if you use your clamp-ons?
It is possible; just much harder. You’ll need to dig your elbows or gloves in as securely as possible. DON’T try to use your crampons.
While he is being very cautious, it’s probably best not to get into the habit of using your feet. When you slip, you’re most likely to do whatever you’ve practised automatically. If you’ve practised digging in your toes, and you happen to be wearing crampons, there’s a good chance you’ll break an ankle.
Besides, knees are always better in case you hit a snag– your hip is a much stronger joint than either your ankle or your knee.
Same here. We are planning to hike the switchback on Saturday morning. Just bought an Ice-Axe from REI for $79.99. Glad to watch this video.
Sobering.
We intend to ascend Mt. Whitney in questionable ice conditions. This video will at least give us a chance, should we get in over our heads.
Thanks!
very helpful
Yes you’re correct. The key is to keep your weight on the axe as much as possible, but with no crampons it would be silly not to use your feet. He’s being a little over-cautious about the feet IMHO
O.k., so how about this guy do one with the Clampons only? Or it aint possible?
I’m just saying – I bet half the doods who die lose their axe.
You can’t tie the axe to ya cause you will fall on it.
So what? Don’t lose the axe? Cold hands? Easy.
So what about the clamp-ons – the state of the union address, statement to the country, whatever you call it?
