Folding the fixie was slightly more involved than my other bike. I have to derail the chain because the chain doesn’t give like a bike with a dérailleur . Other than that, it was a snap.

This is the route I just biked, interestingly (to me), the longest I’ve biked since moving to PEI. (46km). I’m planning to do the tip to tip this year, so I have to get into long distance shape.

I am super impressed so far, as this was my second serious ride of the year, and it’s so early! The weather has been phenomenal, 17 degrees today, 19 on Saturday when I did the first serious ride of 30km.

Have been away for the last week — visited Cambridgeshire. Ray wanted to look at recumbent bikes and we visited a specialist while we were down there. We managed a short 7 mile ride around the lanes on these recumbent trike’s. Great fun +++++++ we are going to buy one!!

When I started on educational leave, my plan was to ride my bike to the internship and back. I thought it was a great idea: I’d get in better shape, save on gas, parking, and give my transmission a break. No problems, right?

Then I took my bike on the Pittsburgh streets and it scared the shit out of me. Cars would happily run you off the road or just ignore you completely. I sometimes wonder how anyone rides in Pittsburgh.

I saw this out of the corner of my eye on Friday and was able to stop and get this picture early Sunday morning. Ghost Bikes are set up by the biking community whenever one of their own is injured or killed by a careless driver. They’re basically what you see here: an old bike spray painted white and affixed with a sign letting drivers know exactly what happened. Sometimes its a warning, sometimes a plea, sometimes a tombstone. I had heard about these popping up in New York. Seeing one of these in Pittsburgh literally chills me.

The text below is mostly from 2007, before NYC had begun experimenting with new bike lane designs, yet many of the new bike lanes from 2008-10 still suffer many of the same problems that this design addresses.

This is an idea for a bike lane for a one-way NYC Avenue. (There is also an alternative, less-preferred design at www.flickr.com/photos/10798592@N08/1414440539/. Click on "all sizes.")

The lane marked above with "?" represents a typical NYC Class 2 bike lane on a typical NYC one-way avenue.

Notice how on every block, the Class 2 lane suffers serious obstructions and hazards created by vehicles parked, parking, standing, or turning, and also by pedestrians. These conditions, and the frequency with which they occur as depicted in the graphic, are very common in NYC, 24-7-365. Sometimes, they render bike lanes nearly useless.

*The red lane in the middle of the avenue is a solution.* It’s a *bike-and-fire-only* lane. (I only suggest it would work on one-way avenues. I don’t claim the design would work on two-way streets.) It’s as wide as all the other car lanes. Human-powered vehicles and emergency vehicles are allowed to travel in it.

By placing the bike lane in (or near) the middle, CYCLISTS ARE SPARED THE HAZARDS THAT CONSTANTLY APPEAR ON THE EDGE OF THE ROAD. They are also made more visible to motorists. They avoid vehicles parking, stopping, and standing, and they avoid pedestrians blindly stepping into the lane, or using the lane to move food carts/hand trucks, etc. Cyclists (and pedicabs) are given more room than they currently are in most Class 2 lanes, which are dangerously narrow–very often cyclists have to weave into car lanes to overtake one another. (Currently, cars are given room to overtake one another, so why shouldn’t human powered-vehicles? There are certainly enough of them now.)

For traffic controls, there are BIKE-SPECIFIC green lights at ALL sides of all intersections. They give cyclists time to safely enter the lane from a side street, or safely exit the lane, before the cars around them start moving. To exit the red lane while cars are moving with a green signal, cyclists would have to cross car lanes, but the increased awareness of bikes this design would provide would mitigate that hazard. And of course, exiting cyclists could avoid that hazard altogether by simply stopping at a *green* light (the width of the lane would allow them to do that without impeding anyone), and waiting through the signal cycle till they get a "bike green." ***Please note–this is only one of two alternatives–the other, which I don’t like as much, uses "bike boxes" instead of bike-only green lights.***

This design also accomplishes the worthy, and proven-often-harmless act of taking surface area away from cars, but much more cheaply than re-building entire avenues. (Such complex rebuilding would be necessary for some avenues, but this is another option that should be considered.)

This lane is NOT physically separated. Rather, it prominently, and repeatedly displays the text, "NO CARS EXCEPT X-ING," and "BIKE AND FIRE ONLY.", and/or other text / icons. It is also colored differently from the rest of the road bed.

Here is the part that people think is crazy: Motorists would be allowed to cross the lane, but not stay in it. I think that with clear and highly visible road markings, most motorists would obey the rule.

If this design seems unrealistic now, I submit that that’s only because there might not be enough cyclists yet to keep the red lane full enough of bikes to keep cyclists on motorists’s minds.

Below, more rambling thoughts:

This center bike lane would create a sort of "bike thoroughfare" or "bike highway" for extended travel on a one-way Avenue like those in most of Midtown Manhattan. It’s a lane in or near the MIDDLE of a one-way avenue (not on the side), colored and marked very visibly so that it’s clear to motorists that at all times, it’s only for emergency vehicles and human powered vehicles (HPVs). Motorists may cross it when needed, but not travel in it. (If people worry that THAT’s unrealistic as far as self-enforcement, just look at the ONE good thing about Class 2 lanes–yes, motorists abuse them 99 different ways, but generally, they know not to DRIVE in them. And that’s with just dinky little white lines!) To allow human-powered vehicles time to get into or out of the lane (from or to cross streets), at every side of every intersection, HPVs would have their own stop stripe, out ahead of the the stop stripe for cars (both on the Ave. AND on side streets).

I’m about to take my restricted bike test in the next few months and a moronic lorry driver has just written of my 125. It seems point less to buy another 125 when I want to upgrade once I have passed my test. So can I buy the 250 now and get it restricted?

Being a responsible motor bike rider does not only mean riding responsibly and ensuring safety. It also means having the right bike insurance that’s perfect for you and your motor bike. Motor bike insurance is when a motor bike rider pays a set premium to an insurance company so they will cover certain or all aspects of the expense if an accident takes place. The insurance policy ensures that they are bound to pay for your specific financial losses pertaining to your motor bike.

If you’re thinking of getting a motor bike insurance policy it is very important to first educate yourself and understand all of the conditions and coverage aspects. Most people think that they are covered and only when an accident occurs they are shocked to find that their policy doesn’t cover the damages in that type of situation. Simply put, a car ensures more safety to the driver and to others around as opposed to motor bikes. Since motor bikes are high risk most insurance companies are reluctant to cover them. There are three types of motor bike insurance policies which are offered by most insurance companies.

Liability, Collision and Comprehensive are the three major types of motor bike insurance policies. Liability insurance is when the injuries or damages of an accident are covered for the other people involved in an accident. This is the most basic and cheapest insurance policy to get into. However, the drawback of this motor bike policy is that it doesn’t cover you or your motor bike’s damages. Collision coverage is when the policy covers to pay for the damages to you and your motor bike. It is important to check if the cost of the bike will be replaced if it is deemed a total loss by the insurance company. Watch out for policies that have fine print expressing that they will only pay the depreciated value of the bike. That’s a trick most insurance companies use to get away with paying for the complete cost of the bike. You have to make sure and ask about the medical coverage the insurance policy will provide. Most insurance companies which claim to have cheap motor bike insurance policies to offer are covering extremely few aspects of medical coverage or none at all. Comprehensive coverage is a policy which covers incidents such as fire or vandalism damages caused to your motor bike. If your motor bike gets stolen, comprehensive coverage replaces the bike for you. But it will be a difficult claim to make if the bike is stolen with the keys still in the ignition.

The premium that you pay for a motor bike insurance policy is determined and calculated according to different factors such as: your age, how many years you have had a motor bike driving license, your riding history, for what purpose you will be using the bike, the kind and brand of motor bike, how far you will be riding the motor bike annually, and what area you live in. You are responsible for notifying the insurance company of any changes you have made to the bike whether it is cosmetic or performance enhancing. If you change the purpose of usage for the bike or if other people are using it are also reasons to notify the insurer.

It is easy to save money and get a decent motor bike insurance policy by incorporating a couple tips in your life. An insurer usually offers a mileage discount if you limit the usage of your bike. You can also avoid paying higher premiums by storing the bike in a garage, getting the motor bike fixed with an alarm and other proper security features to avoid it being stolen or vandalized. It is also a good idea to get a policy with higher excess which is what you will pay towards any damages in an accident before the insurance company contributes. In most cases, if you purchase motor bike insurance online you will get it considerably cheaper. If you have the financial means to make your payment all at once as opposed to monthly installments you will be rewarded with a cheaper motor bike insurance policy. It is also necessary to build a respectable no claims history with the insurance company for a couple of years before you get a bike insured. If they see your credibility beforehand, the chances are you will get a great policy with that insurance company. If you have more than one bike to insure a multi bike insurance policy might be a better option for you to obtain. A multi bike insurance policy allows you to add many bikes under one policy.

There is no instant solution for getting a good deal on motor bike insurance. The key to getting a great deal is maintaining a creditable riding record, no claims history and researching and finding out the options you have with all the insurance companies available before you settle down to pick one.

There are 20-odd of these bikes around. It was made by Yahoo in Brooklyn and San Diego, and came in a truck.
