    Today’s highlights include 40 minutes of high definition video footage of Ben Stookesberry and Chris Korbulic kayaking in India and an article by Roz Savage highlighting characteristics of successful ocean rowers.

    1. James Ketchell makes final preparations for this years Atlantic Rowing Race and thankfully lands a sponsorship deal with Speedo.
    2. Mick Dawson and Chris Martin reached San Francisco on 13 November 09 having rowed unsupported from Japan. 189 days of hardship, rowing in 2-3 hour shifts, 24 hours a day they covered a staggering 4,500 miles as the crow flies, but with all the wind and currents they have actually rowed about 6,930 miles in total.
    3. Greg Kolodziejzyk has put together an excellent article detailing the reasons that previous ocean rowing expeditions have failed. He goes on to discuss possible strategies for handling each situation as he prepares for his challenge of pedaling 4300km from Canada to Hawaii in a human powered boat.
    4. Douglas Wilcox has some beautiful sea kayaking pictures taken exploring the coastline and mountains of Scotland.

    • ]]>     Sarah Outen is a rare female athlete in the male dominated world of ocean rowing. In 2009, aged just 23 she rowed her way into the record books by rowing solo across the Indian Ocean. An epic 3500 mile crossing by an inspirational female rower that took 124 days.

    Female Ocean RowingOcean Rowing is one of toughest of all ultra endurance sports. There being little feeling of progress or changing landscape. With that in mind Sarah’s achievement is remarkable.

    I love her spirit and enthusiasm. Watching her on video, you feel every emotion of the journey with her. The hardship and pain, the joy and exhilaration.

    The video also captures the fear and loneliness that I imagine are never far below the surface on such a voyage. Sarah was only 23 when she set out and i think it makes her achievements all the more special. I find it hard to imagine at 23 having the strength, tenacity, bravery, grit and passion that she demonstrated day after day to complete her row.

    • ]]>     Overcoming the fear and anxiety of falling is a rock climbing skill that every climber must learn. To some climbers it comes naturally and they appear unburdened by it. While others can be paralysed by it.

    Overcoming fearSometimes this fear is justified when the position is very exposed whilst in other cases there really is little danger and our fears are more personal.

    i’m sure that, like me, you have read many books by experienced climbers and mountaineers who discuss their psychology and strategy for overcoming fear.

    One of the problems with this kind of writing is that we can’t see it in practice. Usually we read it. Think “yes thats good” maybe we even get our yellow marker out and highlight the words of wisdom then the next time we find ourselves in a position of fear it all goes out the window.

    We grip tighter, we get progressively more pumped, our legs shake and panic consumes us. I’m afraid I’m not going to offer any magic wand. But what I have found on Climbing Tribe is an old rock climbing video, (not sure how old – anyone any ideas ?) which I think gives a very practical, real life demonstration of overcoming fear and anxiety about taking a fall.

    Unlike modern films where climbers are shown making sexy moves to a background of strong music this video features a live discussion by the climbers. I found this dialogue fascinating as it reveals the essence of what is going on in the dangerous and exposed position that the climber on lead is facing.

    Interesting to note is the vocal support that the belayer provides. This is very important and can make all the difference to a climber suffering a panic attack. The belayers words and particularly his joking banter help take the lead climbers mind of the danger and his fear and allow him to REFOCUS on the problem in hand.

    Often this is all that is necessary. Almost a form of distraction which allows us to come back to the present, analyse the problem and action a solution. In a sense the belayer is sharing the problem and helping him to manage his fear.

    • ]]>     Azazel TeamClimbing and mountaineering books and films often portray a very one sided image of expedition life. It is a picture of hardship, extreme conditions and death.

    Whilst there is no doubt that this is true and of course makes compelling viewing and reading.

    One only has to think about “Touching the Void” which sent shivers down my spine and had me glued to the book unable to put it down to see the commercial value of such content.

    There is however another side to expedition life and that is the sense of fun, camaraderie, excitement and sheer joy of being in the mountains, on a “project” with your mates. Isn’t that really why we do it? Yes we love the challenge, the adventure but when all said and done, it is sharing the moment and experiences with our mates that counts and forms our lasting memories.

    Azazel PakistanSuccess or failure is rarely the point, it is the smiles, the jokes, the banter, the comic accidents the “epics” that we remember and still discuss and laugh about together years later in the pub.

    I came across this fantastic climbing expedition video by 4 French guys who are climbing a Himalayan big wall in Pakistan. What struck me was the sense of fun that the video captures.

    I really felt their friendship and sense of fun. It gives a great alternative picture of expedition life. I hope you enjoy ! Don’t miss the credits they are hilarious!

Participants have the ability to transport with “relative” ease all that they need and have the opportunity to explore over quite large distances. In 2008 Alan Brook and Kobi Sade spent 4 weeks exploring the North West coast of Greenland.     • ]]>     I was fortunate enough to see the London premier of a new documentary (Running to the Limits) examining the progress of 3 very different aspiring international marathon runners. It is a fabulous portrait and an inspirational documentary of what is possible when an ordinary man (overweight, heavy drinker & smoker) makes a personal and life changing commitment to see if he can make it as an international distance runner. At times funny and sad it is a triumph for what is possible when we truly apply ourselves. This is a must see and is being shown on UK TV Channel 4 the second week in DEC 09. (Global distribution to follow)

    • ]]>     Admitting defeat and knowing when to say enough is enough is a vital life saving skill for any adventurer who is pushing the boundaries of what the human body is capable. This doesn’t make it any easier to implement nor any easier to deal with the waiting media and sponsors on homecoming. Chris Bray and Clark Carter are two young Australian adventurers who had to face just such a situation in 2005. Their true strength and character was demonstrated when in 2008 they went back again to get the job done. Well done lads !
