    The Adventure of a Lifetime

    Adventure of a lifetime“Firstly I would like to thank Luke for allowing me to contribute to this fantastic website were we can become inspired and live or our dreams.

    So, What am I doing here?

    Well, shortly after university, rather than getting caught up trying to find a job a place to live etc etc I have decided to take life by the scruff of the neck and see what it can offer and what I can learn from it.

    I will do this by doing 3 expeditions, cycling, walking and climbing… A 4th to be announced.

    So, on the 5th January I will leave my house and cycle to 12,000 miles to New Zealand. Once in New Zealand, I plan to walk the entire length of both islands (3000km) then after some time in New Zealand I shall cycle my way up the Americas onward to Alaska. Now, once in Alaska Mount Mckinley is on my hit list…

    It’s a long way a way yet but I am looking forward to updating my website and giving advice into how to set up a expedition. I will be documenting my adventure in various styles…. blog posts, photography, audio, film and a web series.

    The Path WalkerExperience is an expensive teacher. A hospital, divorce or the loss of self-respect are even more expensive. I know, because that’s how I learned most of what I now know.

    I didn’t have bad luck. I was just too driven to hear the warning signals, too obsessed with work and play to see that I was on a roller coaster of my own making. Eventually the wheels fell off and I was given the lucky break to be able to rebuild my shattered reality and get back on the bike.

    I’m a free spirited entrepreneur. I love helping people, and I do this now and my full time life. But it wasn’t always this way. I banged into walls, hurt myself, hurt others, made stupid and unnecessary mistakes and then got back to life by learning from every single blunder I made. I mean, that’s the benefit of these almost life shattering calamities we create, we can learn.

    The key to it was to stop blaming the world, people, luck, the stars, my karma and whatever else I could find to distance myself from reality In its place, I put nature.

    And that’s the story I’d love to share here. How, using nature as a guide I got back on the path, found the beauty of life, soothed my aching heart, ran marathons, climbed hills in the Himalayas and met some extraordinary people. Every step is an opportunity. All I had to do was learn to take those steps in the right direction.

    The Path Walker

    The Path WalkerMy first trip to Nepal was in 1986, in the midst of a personal crisis. I went to find my own nirvana, so I climbed to the top of a mountain and stood there waiting for the lights to go on and my life to change.

    There I stood, after 3 months of hard work, preparation and training with a realisation that was totally terrible. I had all the mind noise up there that I had down here: And that is the beginning of this story…

    That’s the start of my new Book, my 11th on the laws of nature but this time, it’s about my 47 journeys up with the monks, nuns, sherpa’s and Nepali’s of the Himalayas of Nepal.

    I’d love your feedback. It goes to the printer within weeks so, here it is, for you to read and enjoy and, if you see fit, make comment.

    There are final edits, 50 photos and some serious layout shifts to do, but you’ll sort of see through that. It’s going to be in book shops early 2010 although on sale in Aussie a little earlier.

    • ]]>     Azazel TeamClimbing and mountaineering books and films often portray a very one sided image of expedition life. It is a picture of hardship, extreme conditions and death.

    Whilst there is no doubt that this is true and of course makes compelling viewing and reading.

    One only has to think about “Touching the Void” which sent shivers down my spine and had me glued to the book unable to put it down to see the commercial value of such content.

    There is however another side to expedition life and that is the sense of fun, camaraderie, excitement and sheer joy of being in the mountains, on a “project” with your mates. Isn’t that really why we do it? Yes we love the challenge, the adventure but when all said and done, it is sharing the moment and experiences with our mates that counts and forms our lasting memories.

    Azazel PakistanSuccess or failure is rarely the point, it is the smiles, the jokes, the banter, the comic accidents the “epics” that we remember and still discuss and laugh about together years later in the pub.

    I came across this fantastic climbing expedition video by 4 French guys who are climbing a Himalayan big wall in Pakistan. What struck me was the sense of fun that the video captures.

    I really felt their friendship and sense of fun. It gives a great alternative picture of expedition life. I hope you enjoy ! Don’t miss the credits they are hilarious!

    • ]]>     “Living in the present moment” is such a simple statement. But oh so hard to master. It is a key ingredient for happiness in life but becomes CRITICAL if we are to fulfil our ambitions in endurance sports. When tiredness, pain and exhaustion sweep our body and mind after hours or days on a journey and dreams of giving up, running away from the pain fill our head then then forcing our thoughts to the here and now may help see off the demons. This expedition listing is by Chris Walker and outlines his upcoming Himalayan trekking adventure.

    A trekking adventure in Nepal

    Chris WalkerIt would seem that a person who has walked the rocky path from the hills of Nepal up the 5600meter Trekking Peaks on the sides of Mount Everest and the surrounding Himalayas, might become a bit complacent. But each time I take a new client on this journey, it promises to be yet another deep personal confrontation, a journey both within and along the path.

    My next trip involves two Canadian Women who, some five years ago committed to celebrate their 50th birthdays high in these mountains. They’ve been training, walking and preparing for over twelve months and for them, this will be a true expedition, mind, body and spirit.

    I’ve found that risk is not the core variable in an expedition. It’s the human being that makes a journey. For some I meet in Nepal over these past 25 years, skiing off the top of MT Everest with a snow board and parachute doesn’t even pose a threat, while others, leaving their family out of radio contact for a few days is a huge journey.

    I value small increments in time – by learning to celebrate that tiny moment of time called now, you conserve massive amounts of life forces and vitality. This is where the great painting is painted, the great golf shot is struck, the baby knows it’s loved, chronic fatigue cannot exist. Depression has no home in a mind that does not want or desire.

    I used to measure my endurance skill by how exhausted I became. If I was really spent I’d be proud to say to friends, “Phew, I had a really hectic week.” And that would, in my opinion, reveal the pride of the tempo of my life. Anything less was lazy and un-Chris-like.

    Now, it’s the opposite. If someone asks, “How is your week Chris?” I say, “I’m having a beautiful week,” even on Monday at 10.00am.

    Save the Poles Expedition
